The university was established in 1980 by the Manipur University Act. It was converted from state university to central university in 2005. Manipur University Imphal campus is spread over an area of 287 acres of land. The university is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with grade A. The university also has a centre for Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). The university provides ample facilities for the overall development of the students. Manipur University Scholarships

Students aspiring for Manipur University Imphal scholarships can apply for central government scholarships, state government scholarships and scholarships offered by the UGC. The various scholarships students can avail at the university are Post Matric Scholarship for ST Students, PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child, PG Scholarship Scheme for SC/ST Students for pursuing Professional Courses and PG Scholarship for University Rank Holders (1st and 2nd rank holders). Students have to meet the scholarship eligibility criteria to get the scholarship amount.

1. Post Matric Scholarship for ST Students-  This scholarship is offered by Manipur state government Ministry of Tribal Affairs. Those candidates who are permanent resident of the state and pursuing a regular course and whose annual family income is upto Rs 2.5 lakhs can avail this scholarship. Under this scheme, Rs 550 per month for Group 1, Rs 530 per month for Group 2, Rs 300 per month for Group 3 and Rs 230 per month for group 4 is awarded.
2. PG Indira Gandhi Scholarship for Single Girl Child- The girl students up to the age of 30 years and pursuing full-time 1st year PG programme are eligible to get this scholarship. Rs 36,200 per annum is the scholarship amount awarded under this scheme.
3. PG Scholarship Scheme for SC/ST Students for pursuing Professional Courses- This scholarship is awarded by University Grants Commission, MHRD. Those candidates  pursuing professional courses from the institution/college/university recognised by the UGC or funded by central or state government are eligible to get this scholarship. Rs 7800 per month (for ME/MTech) and Rs 4500 per month (for other professional courses) are the scholarship amount awarded.
4. PG Scholarship for University Rank Holders (1st and 2nd rank holders)- 1st and 2nd rank holders at UG level pursuing full time postgraduate course, whose age is upto 30 years and have minimum 60% marks at UG level are awarded the scholarship amount of Rs 3,100 per month.

The placement assistance is provided by the university with the help of its placement department.
