The government of Uttrakhand is committed to provide state of art medical facilities to the people of remote hills of the State of Uttrakhand. After successful establishemnt of State medical institutions at Haldwani (Nainital), Srinagar(Garhwal) and Dehradun in last decade, a step forward, the State government decided to establish another medical institute in the name of “Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Almora” at district Almora of kumaun hills of the State. The institute is under sponsorship scheme of Governemnt of India. At present, the college has the capacity of 100 MBBS admissions annually.
The institute is located in two piece land. The Medical College campus of the institute is spread over 25 acres (9.90 hectares) of land known as Moth-free Estate, Pandey khola, near Vikas Bhawan, Almora. The aproach to the Medical College is through the State highway-37 to Vikas Bhawan. The associated teaching hospital of the institute is the pre existing 200 bedded “Govardhan Tiwari Government Base Hospital Almora” which is getting upgraded to 500 bed capacity. The Hospital is almost 7 Km. Away from the medical college campus and is spread over 17.13 acres (6.85 hectares) land. The institute has applied for letter of permission from Medical Council of India for 100 MBBS admissions for the academic year 2019-20.
