The institute was established in the year 1956 under the Government of India. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry is also known as JIPMER. In the year 2008, JIPMER Puducherry was declared as an “Institution of National Importance” under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India by an Act of Parliament, JIPMER, Puducherry. The super-specialty block, the trauma care centre and the auditorium of JIPMER was inaugurated by the former President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam along with Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss in 2008. The campus of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research is spread over 192 acres and has a well-developed infrastructure and modern amenities. With a faculty strength of 326 members and 1571 students enrollment, JIPMER Puducherry offers a total of 88 courses in the streams of medicine and allied sciences, sciences, pharmacy, arts, humanities and social sciences.
The institute is located at Jipmer Campus Road, Gorimedu in Puducherry. The nearest airport to JIPMER is the Puducherry Airport, located 5.6 km and students can reach the campus in about 10-15 mins. The nearest railway station from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research is the Puducherry Railway Station which is located 6.6 km away and students can reach the institute campus in approximately 15 mins. Jayanthi bus depot is approximately 2 km away from the campus.

Hostels, library, sports, cafeteria, auditorium, etc. are some of the JIPMER Puducherry facilities. The campus has separate hostels for boys and girls that ensure a comfortable stay at the campus. The rooms are well furnished. The library has a humongous collection of books and readers can also avail the facility of a digital library. The institute organises various sports events for its students. Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research provides medical assistance to its member whenever needed. Candidates aspiring for a JIPMER scholarship can avail of the national level scholarship by applying on the website of the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). These scholarships can be availed only of he/she meets the eligibility criteria. For admission to M.B.B.S and MD/MS/D.M/M.Ch/MDS JIPMER Puducherry cutoff is released every year. JIPMER cutoff for the M.B.B.S programme is based on NEET scores whereas for the PG programmes, INI CET scores are required. Candidates have to mandatorily meet the JIPMER cutoff in order to secure admission to these courses.
