Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), Bellaryis a Karnataka state government medical college located in the vast area of 173 acres approximately 7 kilometers from Bellary city. There are separate blocks for Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Preventive and Social Medicine. Medical college hospital (MCH), Bellary house all the clinical departments. A separate lecture hall complex called as “B.C Roy Hall’’ of four well-furnished air-conditioned theater type individual lecture halls are available for regular teaching purpose. A separate air-conditioned mini auditorium of 300 seating capacity called “Shikshakara Bhavana” is available for conducting conferences and continuing medical education (CME) and workshops. A separate auditorium “Sababhavana” that can occupy than 1000 members are available for conduction college day, convocation, university examinations and other major functions. Two play grounds, one for conducting major sports events with gallery facility is situated in the entrance of VIMS campus, a small play ground near boys hostel for regular college events is available. There are separate hostel blocks for boys and girls and staff quarters facilities are also present. VIMS, Bellary conducts (1) MMBS course (2) Post-graduate degree courses (3) Post-graduate diploma courses (3) Superspeciality courses (4) Nursing courses (5) Paramedical courses, GDCRI Bellary conducts (1) BDS course. Admission is through NEET examination and seats allotted by Karnataka examination authority (KEA) .
The Medical College is located in the vast former Allipur Jail Complex which is spread over 173 acres of land. The British Government established this high security and high profile, Allipur Jail in 19th Century. All the barracks in this jail complex were constructed in the fag end of the 19th Century. Prisoners from a Boerr war and the Two World Wars were imprisoned in this world famous jail. Later, prominent national leaders like, Sri. Rajaji, Sri.Kamaraj, Sri.Sanjeev Reddy, Sri.Tekur Subramanyam, Sri.V.V. Giri and a host of other who participated in the freedom struggle were lodged in this jail. So, it is most appropriate to have a “Freedom Memorial Complex” in front of the Medical College.
