Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) is a 350 bedded multispecialty hospital at eco-friendly Langol, outskirts of Imphal, providing secondary and tertiary healthcare in the region with more than 1400 dedicated trained caregivers. Since its inception in 1985 as a mono-practice clinic to the first ever ISO-certified hospital, Shija Hospitals has had a meaningful journey and looks forward to a remarkable future ahead by adding cardiac science, kidney and cornea transplantation, infertility treatment, joint replacement surgery, Wellness Park, Cancer and Palliative Care etc. The Emergency and Trauma Care supported by 29 clinical departments and diagnostics services ensures that all critical cases are given immediate and adequate care.

SHRI strictly follows the system of segregation of bio-medical waste at source and ultimately appropriate treatment and disposal of waste through incinerators, shredders, sharps pits, deep burial etc for the safety of the environment. Shija Bio-Medical Waste Management is now recognised by the Manipur Pollution Control Board as the common facility for the entire state. State-of-the-art Shija Blood Bank & Transfusion Services is a Public Private Partnership initiative, funded by North East Council, Shillong and Planning Department, Govt. of Manipur. This is the only licensed blood bank accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) in North Eastern states. It is equipped with Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) facility to screen HIV, Hepatitis B & C Viruses which is the first installation in entire Eastern India.

The Shija Academy of Nursing is one of the leading nursing institutes in the state. SHRI also trains paramedics and is recognised for Post-graduate DNB courses in General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Medicine and Plastic Surgery. Under Shija Overseas Training Program, SHRI in collaboration with AMASI (Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India), took up the initiative of providing free training to two surgeons and six nurses from Monywa General Hospital, Myanmar for two months in the areas of Laparoscopic surgery, Operation Theatre Technology and Critical Care.

Over 4500 cleft lip and palate patients have been operated free of cost and given smiles on their faces under Smile Train Shija Cleft Project not only in Manipur but also in the neighbouring states of Nagaland, Assam, Mizoram and also the neighbouring country of Myanmar.

In its contribution towards the neighbouring country, SHRI started the venture of Mission Myanmar in May 2013 with a firm belief to bring the two nations together. So far, three successful missions were ventured in continuation of its service wherein 134 cleft lip and palate, 179 cataract blindness and 32 keyhole surgeries were performed for free. Our initiative has been much appreciated by not only the state officials but also Ministers from the neighbouring country. There have been various visits by their ministers at the base hospital as well as at the Campsite, i.e, at Monywa General hospital during our various missions.

The Shija Eye Care Foundation conducts various community-based peripheral outreach camps in rural and tribal areas. More than 12000 patients with cataract blindness have undergone free surgeries through Shija Foundation.

Shija is a World Bank Grantee for winning World Bank ‘Development Marketplace Project’ competition in 2014 for innovative solutions. A continuous capacity-building exercise for Shija has been taken up with the grant fund. Dr Palin Kh, Chairman cum Managing Director of Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt. Ltd. has been selected as one of the 25 Healthcare Influencers of India, by Healthcare Executive magazine, a monthly publication by Hosmac.

SHRI achieved a medical feat by setting Guinness World Record for the removal of the largest neck tumour in the world in 2003. We have also successfully performed 7 re-implantations of totally amputated hands and fingers for the first time in North Eastern India. With India’s Look East/ Act East Policy, Manipur’s favourable location bordering Myanmar, surface and air connectivity with ASEAN nations, the meeting point of two superpower nations -China and India, huge tourism potentials of the state especially in war (Battle of Imphal-Biggest in 2nd World War), ecology, sports and cultural arenas – Shija strongly believes that Manipur, one day, will become one of the healthcare destinations of South East Asia. Our future project is meant for medical value tourism and includes enhancement of the existing facilities and the addition of Kidney and Cornea Transplantation, Cardiac Science, Infertility treatment, Joint Replacement Surgery, Wellness Parks etc.
