NRI Quota MBBS admission 2024- Popular medical courses like MBBS, BDS and other UG level courses as a career is demanding among the students after 12th study and to pursue their medical education they have to crack NEET entrance exam.

NTA NEET exam, medical education rules, policies are managed and authorized by the  National  Medical Commision of India (NMC). MCI approves MBBS seats to different colleges for admission and students gets admissions in these medical colleges on the basis of students score/rank on NEET result and category.

These medical  seats for admission are majorly divided in All India quota and State quota, where 15% of seats belong to All India Quota and 85% to State Quota.

(For Indian Resident Students) Apart from All India Quota and State Quota, there is also a 15% reserved special quota for NRI (non-Indian residentials) called as NRI Quota. NRI Quota specially reserved by NMC for the students who live/study outside India but originally belong to the country.

NRI Quota MBBS admission 2024

Through NRI Quota ,these NRI students can easily get admission in these 15% reserved seats and can study in Top Indian medical colleges. Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) are also included in the NRI Quota.  But still, they have to Pass/qualify the NEET UG  Exam ( scheduled on May 5, 2024) to get admission. In this post, we are going to share all the information like all the candidates comes under NRI quota, eligibility, documents required and the step by step admission process after the result. We have also added a FAQ section in the end of this article, answering all the most frequently asked questions related to NRI quota. So let’s dive into it and read the article till end. But first, let’s understand which candidates come under 15% NRI quota reservation. These Students/candidates come under the NRI quota as they are meeting below following criteria,

  • Person of Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and their children are considered as NRI
  • Students who are children of State or Central Government employees, who are staying abroad on deputation period are considered as NRI.
  • Students must belong to Indian origin and live or study in a foreign country.
  • Indian citizens’ children staying abroad for business or employment are also considered as NRI.
  • Candidates who are born abroad but the parents are of Indian origin fall under the NRI category.

Major changes in 2023 NRI conversion notification

The conversion of Nationality of candidates from ‘Indian’ to ‘NRI’ is ‘Provisional’ based on the documents submitted by the candidates which will be verified by the allotted college authorities at the time of reporting and the Embassy Certificate from the sponsorer may be sent to the Ministry of External Affairs/ respective High Commissions for verification. If found ‘FAKE’ the Provisional Allotment of candidate may be cancelled and legal action might be initiated by the competent authority- Source MCC.

Eligibility Requirements for NRI Quota MBBS Admission  (Haryana)

Haryana is one of the most popular states for MBBS admission, with 151 seats available through the NRI Quota in Haryana Medical Colleges.NRIs and their offspring who live in Haryana or in other Indian states are eligible for MBBS admission under the NRI quota. NRI-sponsored students are also eligible;however, they are given second priority. All NRI Quota seats in Haryana Medical Colleges are filled through Haryana NEET UG Counselling.

Students/candidates fall under the NRI quota if they match the following conditions.

  1. Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and their children are considered NRIs.
  2. Students who are children of State or Central Government workers who are staying overseas on deputation are considered NRIs.
  3. Students must be of Indian culture and reside or study in a foreign country.
  4. Indian nationals’ children living overseas for business or job are likewise termed NRIs.
  5. Candidates who are born overseas but the parents are of Indian culture fall into the NRI category.

The priority for admission under the NRI category would be assessed as follows:

1.  Actual NRIs/OCIs/PIOs candidates, or children/wards of NRIs/OCIs/PIOs who were born in Haryana or any other Indian state or union territory.
2.  NRI-Sponsor: If the student’s first-degree relative is an NRI and lives overseas, and the candidate fits the following criteria:
3.  He/she should be the closest relative..

The closest relation comprises the following blood relations:

  1. Father’s real brother and sister (uncle and aunt).
  2. Mother’s biological brother and sister (actual maternal uncle and aunt).
  3. Father and his mother (grandfather and grandma).
  4. Father and mother of the mother (maternal grandfather and grandmother).
  5. First-degree paternal and maternal cousins.
  6. The NRI sponsor should normally reside abroad.

Eligibility requirements for NRI Quota MBBS Admission (PUNJAB)

Candidates who wish to apply for NRI quota seats must get a provisional eligibility/equivalency certificate from BFUHS, Faridkot, and must pass NEET-UG-2024. Candidates must also apply on the required proforma available on the website, along with the prescribed fee for seats under the NRI quota.
Only NRI/Children of NRI who live in Punjab or in an Indian state other than Punjab are eligible for admission under the NRI Quota. NRI sponsored students are not eligible for MBBS admission in Punjab under the NRI quota.

Important information about MBBS seats under NRI quota in Punjab:

  1. Students enrolling under the NRI Quota must personally appear in BFUHS, Faridkot for document verificationfollowing which they will receive an eligibility certificate. Only students with an Eligibility Certificate will be eligible to apply for NRI seats under the NRI Quota.
  2. The centralized counselling of NRI quota seats will take place prior to the counselling for other categories.
  3. OCI/PIO candidates will be considered solely for the 15% NRI quota seats.

Please keep in mind that rejection rates in the NRI category are extremely high..

Preference for admission under the NRI category is given to NRIs and their children who are originally from Punjab.
NRIs and their children from Indian states other than Punjab.

Under this policy, a non-resident implies a person of Indian origin, whether possessing an Indian or a foreign passport, who is either permanently or temporarily settled outside India, and in any case:

Priority will be given to NRIs/OCIs/PIOs from Punjab, followed by those from other states, for employment, business, or other reasons that indicate an intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.

Eligibility requirements for NRI Quota MBBS Admission (Chandigarh)

Chandigarh is renowned as India’s best medical education location, offering a profusion of undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs that attract students from around the country. Admission to MBBS programs in Chandigarh is based on the NEET exam, with successful applicants taking part in state counseling for enrollment.
The MBBS curriculum in Chandigarh lasts 5.5 years, including 4.5 years of academic study and one year of mandatory internship, providing students with thorough training and practical experience.

  1. The candidates must be of Indian descent. Non-Indian foreign nationals cannot apply for these seats.
  2. To apply for the NEET (UG) – 2023 test, candidates must claim their eligibility for the NRI/OCI category.
  3. Candidates who meet any of the following criteria can apply for admission under this category:
    People of Indian descent who are citizens of nations other than India. and hold the passport of the country in question.
    b. Indian citizens who live overseas.
    c. Indian citizens who have lived in a country outside India for at least three years prior to admission.
  4. For the 2023 admission year, only NEET (UG)-2023 qualified students are eligible to apply for Foreign Indian Student category seats.
  5. The candidates must have passed the subjects of Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English separately in the qualifying examination (equivalent to 12th).
    Securing a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.
  6. Candidates require a certificate of 10+2/pre-medical/10+2+3 system qualifying examination from any university/board, including comprehensive marks and grade explanation sheets. Candidates must mention their percentage marks in Physics.
    Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English at both Class 10+1 and 10+2 levels.
  7. Foreign Indian students who have passed 10+2 from CBSE/PSEB/HPSE/HSEB or another Indian board/university do not need to obtain an eligibility and equivalency certificate from AIU or Panjab University, Chandigarh.
  8. Candidates from Category I will be given first preference.If there are enough eligible candidates in Category-I, they will be admitted ahead of those in Category-II, regardless of merit.
  9. If a seat in the Foreign Indian Student category remains open, it would be replaced by UT Chandigarh Pool General category candidates based on merit/rank in NEET (UG)-2024.

Eligibility requirements for NRI Quota MBBS Admission (Rajasthan)

There is a total of 371 NRI quota MBBS seats available in 23 Government medical institutions.

  1. At least one parent of the student must be an NRI living abroad or sponsoring the student.
  2. The individual sponsoring the student must be a first-degree relative (actual brother/sister) who lives overseas as an NRI.
  3. If a student is taken as a ward by a close relative, they may be considered for admission if the guardian truly treated the student as a ward. The nearest relative must be an NRI living overseas.
    a) Nearest relatives eligible for consideration include the father’s real brother and sister, also known as uncles and aunts.
    b)  Mother’s biological brother and sister (actual maternal uncle and aunt).
    c)  The father’s father and mother are grandparents.
    d)  The mother’s father and mother (her maternal grandfather and grandmother).
    e)  First-degree paternal and maternal cousins.
  4. All NRI candidates must provide documentation of their NRI/OCI/PIO status, such as a certificate from the Indian embassy/Ministry of External Affairs. If the certificate is not accessible, a duly notarized undertaking signed by the sponsor and attested by a Notary Public from the foreign country of residence will be accepted.
  5. A sponsorship affidavit declaring that the sponsor will care for the student and cover the complete course fee must be filed.
  6. If NRI seats remain unfilled after round 2 offline counseling due to a lack of NRI candidates, they would be converted to management/general seats, as directed by the State Government.
  7. Round 2 offline counseling for NRI seats would take place before exhausting management seats in government social institutions.
  8. Candidates who are assigned NRI seats in round 2 counseling are ineligible to participate in round 2 counseling for other seats. They must submit a bond at the time of allotment, stating that they would be liable to pay the total course fee prescribed for the NRI seat if they do not join the given seat or leave the course before completion.
