About MD/MS

Study MD/MS (Doctor of Medicine)/(Master of Surgery) in India

In India, pursuing MD or MS is one of the most respected and promising career paths for medical graduates. Both are postgraduate medical courses, each with its own focus and specialty.

MD (Doctor of Medicine) is a 3-year clinical training program that focuses on treating patients through medicine and non-surgical methods. Students learn to diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of diseases using medical knowledge and patient care techniques.

On the other hand, MS (Master of Surgery) is also a 3-year clinical course, but it focuses on surgical treatments. Students are trained to perform surgeries and handle different surgical conditions with precision and expertise.

After completing MBBS from a recognized college, students can apply for MD or MS programs by appearing in a national-level entrance exam called NEET-PG, which is conducted once a year by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

MBBS graduates who wish to advance their careers can choose MD or MS based on their interest—non-surgical vs surgical specialties. To apply for NEET-PG, candidates must:

  • Have provisional registration with the Medical Council of India (MCI)
  • Complete their MBBS degree from an MCI-recognized medical college
  • Finish a 1-year mandatory internship

Once the candidates qualify for the NEET-PG exam, they have to participate in NEET-PG counselling, which is conducted at both central and state levels.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts central-level NEET-PG counselling on behalf of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This covers:

  • 50% All India Quota seats in all government colleges
  • 100% seats in central universities like AMU and BHU
  • 100% seats in institutions like AFMC, DU, ESIC, and private deemed universities

The state-level NEET-PG counselling is managed by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) of each state. This includes:

  • 50% State Quota seats in government colleges
  • 100% seats in private medical colleges of that state

Who Can Apply for MD/MS in India?

Students who have completed their MBBS degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized medical college in India or abroad (approved by the Medical Council of India) can apply for MD/MS courses.

To get admission, candidates must appear for a Common Entrance Test (CET) after completing MBBS. The NEET-PG exam, conducted by NBE, is held online across the country in a single session.

  1. Eligibility Criteria
    • You must have an MBBS degree from an approved medical college or university.
    • Several entrance exams are conducted for MD/MS admissions in India, with NEET-PG being the most common.
    • Once you clear the exam, different colleges offer admission based on your score.
    • Each college has its own application process, which you can find on their official websites.

  2. Seat Allocation
    • After the exam results are declared, counseling sessions are conducted by respective authorities.
    • Based on your rank and preferences, you will be allotted a seat in a medical college.

  3. Course Duration and Specializations
    • The MD/MS course duration is usually 3 years.
    • Specializations include General Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Surgery, and Orthopedics, among others.

  4. Curriculum

    • Students also have to complete a thesis or dissertation as part of the program.

  5. Certification
    • Regular assessments and exams are conducted during the course to evaluate your progress.
    • After successfully completing the program, students are awarded an MD or MS degree.

  • It is compulsory to complete a 1-year internship before applying.
  • Students must have a permanent registration certificate issued by the NMC or the respective State Medical Council.
  • Candidates who have completed their MBBS degree from abroad must clear the FMGE Screening Test and obtain a permanent registration certificate to be eligible for the NEET PG exam.

Management Quota

  • Who Can Apply

  • Fees
The fees for management quota seats are much higher than government quota seats and vary from college to college.
