MBBS Internship Stipend in India 2026: State-Wise Salary, NMC Rules, Duration and Bond

The MBBS internship stipend in India is the monthly amount paid to medical graduates during their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI). After completing the final MBBS examination, graduates must undergo a 12-month internship to gain practical clinical experience and become eligible for permanent medical registration, subject to applicable regulations.

There is no single uniform stipend amount across India. The stipend is determined by the appropriate state government, university or institution. Consequently, the amount varies between government medical colleges, private medical colleges and central institutions.

In 2026, several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, reported stipend revisions. Other states are also considering changes.

This guide covers the latest reported MBBS internship stipend figures, state-wise comparisons, NMC regulations, internship duration, departmental rotations, leave rules, service bonds and information for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs).

If you are preparing for NEET UG counselling 2026, understanding the stipend and bond policies can help you compare medical colleges before selecting your preferred institution.

What Is the Monthly Stipend for MBBS Interns in India?

An MBBS internship stipend is the monthly payment received by medical graduates while completing their compulsory rotating internship in an approved medical college or hospital.

The internship provides practical experience in clinical departments, including General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Community Medicine and other specialties.

Students often search for the term “MBBS internship salary in India”. However, the correct term is stipend because interns receive financial remuneration during supervised medical training rather than a regular employee’s salary.

Key Facts About MBBS Internship Stipend in 2026

  • No uniform national rate: The stipend amount is fixed by the appropriate authority applicable to the institution, university or state.
  • Central institutions: Some central government medical institutions report a monthly stipend of approximately ₹30,070. The applicable amount should be checked with the individual institution.
  • Government medical colleges: State governments determine the stipend, and several states revised their rates during 2025–2026.
  • Private medical colleges: Stipends vary considerably between institutions. Some private colleges report considerably lower amounts than government colleges.
  • Mandatory payment: Schedule IV, Clause 3(a) of the NMC CRMI Regulations, 2021 requires interns to be paid the stipend fixed by the appropriate authority.

Students should verify the current stipend directly with their shortlisted medical colleges before finalising NEET UG counselling choices.

How to Check a Medical College’s MBBS Internship Stipend

Before selecting a medical college during NEET UG counselling, students should verify the actual stipend amount.

Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official website of the medical college.
  2. Find the stipend disclosure section for MBBS interns.
  3. Check the latest state government notification or Government Order.
  4. Compare the amount with the NMC stipend disclosure information.
  5. Check the applicable stipend for your admission batch and internship year.
  6. Contact the college administration or accounts department for written confirmation.
  7. Ask current interns whether the stipend is paid regularly and whether any deductions apply.

The NMC’s public notice dated 11 July 2025 directs medical colleges to publish course-wise fee structures and stipend information on their official websites.

Why MBBS Internship Stipends Differ Across Government and Private Colleges

There are significant differences between the stipend amounts offered by government and private medical colleges.

Government Medical Colleges

Government medical colleges generally follow the stipend rates prescribed by the respective state government or competent authority.

However, the amount and revision dates differ between states. Some states revise the stipend regularly, while others continue with older rates.

Private Medical Colleges

Private and trust-run medical colleges may have different stipend arrangements depending on the applicable state and institutional rules.

According to the compiled college-reported stipend data used in this article, approximately 90 of around 210 private and trust colleges that submitted a stipend figure reported less than ₹10,000 per month.

Some institutions reported higher amounts. For example, CMC Vellore reported ₹33,920 in the dataset.

These figures are historical disclosures and should not be considered a complete or current census of all private medical colleges.

Students should carefully compare the internship stipend with the total MBBS fee structure before choosing a private medical college.

NMC Rules on Disclosure of Stipend Information

The National Medical Commission has introduced disclosure requirements to improve transparency in medical education.

On 11 July 2025, the NMC issued a public notice titled:

“Mandatory Disclosure of Fee Structures and Payment of Stipend by All Medical Colleges/Institutions.”

The notice directs medical colleges and institutions under the NMC to publish:

  • Course-wise fee structures.
  • Tuition fees.
  • Hostel charges and other applicable fees.
  • Stipend paid to MBBS interns.
  • Stipend paid to Junior Residents and Senior Residents.

The NMC also requires institutions to submit stipend-related information through its prescribed reporting mechanism.

NMC Action Against Non-Compliance

On 12 March 2026, the NMC issued a public notice concerning colleges that had failed to comply with directions relating to stipend disclosure and payment.

The notice included financial penalties and possible regulatory action, such as show-cause notices, withdrawal of course recognition and suspension of admissions, depending on the applicable regulations.

This is an important development for students because it improves transparency regarding stipend payments.

Is a Uniform MBBS Internship Stipend Coming in India?

There is currently no single uniform monthly stipend applicable to every MBBS intern across India.

The amount continues to be determined by the appropriate authority applicable to the institution, university or state under the existing CRMI framework.

Discussions about improving stipend uniformity have taken place, particularly regarding differences between government and private medical colleges.

However, students should not assume that a proposed uniform stipend has become a legally implemented nationwide payment rate.

For the latest information, refer to official NMC notifications and state government orders.

What Should You Do If Your MBBS Internship Stipend Is Not Paid?

Stipend non-payment or delayed payment can create financial difficulties for medical interns.

The NMC CRMI Regulations, 2021 provide for stipend payment as determined by the appropriate authority.

If your college does not pay the applicable stipend, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check the Applicable Stipend

Verify the amount published on the college website or prescribed through the relevant government notification.

Step 2: Maintain Supporting Documents

Keep copies of:

  • Internship joining letter.
  • Departmental posting schedule.
  • Attendance records and duty rosters.
  • Bank statements.
  • Previous stipend payment records.

Step 3: Submit a Written Complaint

Write to the Dean or Principal of your medical college explaining the issue. Request payment of the outstanding stipend and keep a copy of your complaint.

Step 4: Contact the State Directorate

If the issue remains unresolved, approach the State Directorate of Medical Education or the relevant competent authority.

Step 5: Approach the NMC

You may also submit a formal grievance to the National Medical Commission, referring to the applicable CRMI regulations and its public notices concerning stipend payment and disclosure.

Always retain copies of complaints and responses for future reference.

MBBS Bond Rules in India: What Students Should Know

An MBBS service bond is a condition imposed by certain states or medical institutions requiring graduates to serve in designated government healthcare facilities after completing their MBBS.

A bond may also require students to pay a specified penalty if they do not fulfil the applicable conditions.

It is important to understand that a service bond is different from an internship stipend.

Types of MBBS Bonds

1. Compulsory Service Bond

Under this arrangement, medical graduates may be required to work in government hospitals, rural healthcare centres or other designated facilities for a prescribed period.

2. Discontinuation Bond

A discontinuation bond may apply when a student leaves a medical course before completing it. The applicable penalty depends on the admission rules and institutional conditions.

3. Rural Service Bond

Some states require graduates to provide medical services in rural or underserved areas for a specified period.

Does Every State Have the Same MBBS Bond Policy?

No. Bond policies differ between states and institutions.

The applicable conditions may depend on:

  • State quota or All India Quota admission.
  • Government or private medical college.
  • Admission year.
  • Category of admission.
  • Compulsory service requirements.
  • Discontinuation and penalty provisions.

How to Check MBBS Bond Rules

Before selecting a medical college, students should:

  1. Download the latest state counselling prospectus.
  2. Read the bond declaration carefully.
  3. Check the required service period.
  4. Verify the penalty for non-compliance.
  5. Confirm whether the bond applies to All India Quota and state quota candidates.
  6. Check whether the rules have changed for the 2026 admission session.

Important: Do not rely on old bond lists or unofficial websites. The latest applicable counselling prospectus and government notifications should be treated as the primary sources.

MBBS Internship Stipend for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs)

Foreign Medical Graduates are Indian students who obtain their primary medical qualification from medical institutions outside India.

Eligible FMGs must fulfil the applicable NMC requirements, including the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations and the relevant screening examination requirements.

For FMGs governed by the CRMI Regulations, 2021, a one-year compulsory rotating medical internship in India is required after qualifying the FMGE.

However, the applicable rules can differ according to the date of admission to the foreign medical course.

Important NMC Update for FMG Internship 2026–27

On 10 March 2026, the National Medical Commission issued Circular No. U-15024/2/2026-UGMEB concerning the allocation of CRMI internship slots to Foreign Medical Graduates.

The circular prescribed the following allocation criteria:

  • 7.5% of the permitted intern intake in established medical colleges.
  • 100% of CRMI seats in new medical colleges for FMGs.
  • 100% of CRMI seats against enhanced intake in existing medical colleges for the specified period from academic years 2022–23 to 2025–26.

The NMC circular identified 43,250 CRMI internship slots available for FMGs for the 2026–27 academic year, in addition to the seats assigned in the specified listed and erstwhile MCI-approved non-teaching institutions.

State Medical Councils were directed to coordinate the allocation process with the respective Directorates of Medical Education.

Do FMGs Receive an Internship Stipend?

The stipend entitlement should be considered under the applicable regulations and official directions.

Schedule IV of the NMC CRMI Regulations provides for stipend payment to interns as fixed by the appropriate authority.

FMGs should confirm the applicable stipend amount, payment conditions and internship allocation directly with the allotted institution and State Medical Council before joining.

Students who attended online classes during their foreign medical course should also check the relevant NMC clarifications concerning physical attendance and compensatory training.

Important: FMGs who joined their foreign medical course before 18 November 2021 may fall under different regulatory provisions. Therefore, not every FMG should automatically be treated under the same eligibility and internship pathway.

Check MBBS Internship Stipends Before Selecting a Medical College

The MBBS internship is an important stage of medical education because it provides practical clinical experience before permanent medical registration.

Although the NMC provides a regulatory framework for compulsory rotating internship and stipend payment, the actual stipend amount varies according to the appropriate state, university or institutional authority.

Before selecting a medical college through NEET UG counselling, students should compare:

  • Monthly internship stipend.
  • Government or private college status.
  • Hostel and mess charges.
  • Service bond requirements.
  • Internship facilities and hospital exposure.
  • Stipend payment regularity.
  • Latest state government notifications.

Do not select a medical college based only on its advertised stipend. Consider the complete fee structure, bond conditions, clinical training facilities and overall educational environment.

For the most reliable information, always refer to the official NMC regulations, college stipend disclosures and applicable state government orders.

Check Internship Stipends Before Selecting a Medical College

The MBBS stipend is guaranteed by NMC regulation, but its amount is set locally and can differ by more than ₹15,000 a month between colleges. Before NEET counselling, compare each shortlisted college on its published stipend, its bond terms and whether its state has revised the rate recently. If you need help with choices, our team can guide you through NEET UG counselling.
